Join us to learn how the Healthy Youth Act can improve your local schools.

The North Carolina General Assembly changed North Carolina’s law regarding sexuality education in public schools in 2009. These changes will give students the critical fact-based education they need to make safe decisions about their bodies, sex, and relationships as they age into adulthood.  APPCNC was proud to lead the advocacy efforts that led to the passage of the Healthy Youth Act.

The Healthy Youth Act replaces the ineffective, 15-year-old abstinence only until marriage law with Reproductive Health and Safety Information. In a survey of parents of North Carolina public school parents, nearly 92% of parents expressed their desire for the kind of thorough education the law now requires.

The Healthy Youth Act requires that students learn that abstinence is the safest choice and the expected standard for all schoolchildren, while also learning about contraception, STD risk and prevention, and sexual assault and sexual abuse. All information presented must be factually accurate, objective and based upon scientific research that is peer reviewed and accepted by professionals and credentialed experts in the field of sexual health education.

APPCNC is ready and able to work with school systems, parents and communities to help them understand and implement the requirements of the Healthy Youth Act.
